Have you ever seen yourself becoming more and more embroiled in the thoughts your mind is creating, to the point that you have lost sight of where the thought originated? Well, that’s why awareness is important and to say that’s an understatement is no exaggeration. The more we are in observance of ourselves, the more aware we become, and in most situations the less active the mind becomes in creating chaotic thought. To put it simply, to master a more effective and harmonious life, we first need to master objectivity and in order to master that, we need to be aware when the contrast is being presented. In simple English, awareness is key to so many aspects of interpretative language in our bodies, that it should be the first thing we create upon waking and the last thing we explore before going to bed.
So what stops us do you suppose? Is it a desire to avoid the effort or “work” that this might imply? Is it fear we won’t like what we see there? Or is it perhaps a need to be having our minds occupied elsewhere? In my experience, it is all of those things and more. Mindfulness has become something only the dedicated apply and in truth that’s only because a structured belief tells us that’s what we need. It never goes further to accurately tell us why we need it or to encourage us to learn how to do it more easily.
For some this is as simple as just observing the awareness that they feel in the body, in other words, tune into its experience of itself from time to time. We generally only do that when pain, illness or injury arise and even then its typically with resistance of a sort implied. I am sure you will all be familiar with feeling resentful, worried or depressed when pain arises even when it is short lived. This implies a resistance to the state of wellness the body would otherwise acquire.
This brings me to the relevance of mindful awareness and that is to observe the language of emotion from a standpoint of curiosity where you simply say, “oh look at that, I’m feeling this (insert emotion here).” If you were to do that, objectivity would arise, which allows for recognition that we were observing the body speak. How many times do you wonder why you feel the way you do and have your mind search for an answer. You were perfectly content a minute ago and suddenly you feel less so. Well, that is because the body is “listening” to your thoughts with a need to have you recognise when they are obstructing your goals and objectives in life. The most purposeful goals specifically, so that you can stay on track and experience a different life to the one currently making you unhappy/unsettled or discomfited.
It is always going to be obvious that emotion holds greater relevance than meets the eye, in fact, this has been widely studied. But what has not be understood is how we get to have a different relationship with those emotions and why we should even try. I am willing to bet that most of you are now wondering why I brought this up and those who already know, should be aware that even greater involvement is required to truly resolve the dilemmas life brings us, even in the happiest of times, and in so doing, messing with the harmony you worked so hard to acquire.
So why not simply see emotion as a conversation about life and not a finger pointing out dysfunction elsewhere. Would it cause you to observe them with more certainty of wanting that state of harmony you deserve, or would it leave you perplexed wondering what more you need to know in order to progress on life’s journey of discovery and awareness? I like to think of myself as an optimistic person, but I can tell you now, I did not truly know what optimism was until I began a search for understanding and through that, a simple but eternal search for meaning that led to the discovery of just how much awareness creates a basis for true awakening of joy in one’s spirit ,and therefore in the experience of life and its multifaceted awareness of itself.
